Build a product registration form

The product form builder controls the questions asked when someone registers for a product. You can add predefined or custom questions, arrange their order, and decide which answers are required before checkout.

Answers belong to that purchase. This makes the form builder useful for information that can change between registrations, such as a team name, preferred draw time, meal choice, or shirt size for a particular event.

Before you start

Decide whether each answer belongs to this purchase or to the participant's profile.

  • Use the product's Form builder for answers tied to one registration.
  • Use the participant form for information that should follow the participant across registrations, such as contact details, allergies, or a participant photo.
  • Select New question in this Form builder when the available predefined questions do not collect what you need.

Do not recreate waivers, payment fields, or participant profile fields as custom product questions. That splits related information across different records and makes reporting harder.

Open the form builder

Go to Products, open the product type and product, then select Form builder.

The available panel on the left contains questions you can add. The canvas on the right contains the questions currently collected for this product.

Available product questions, layout tools, preview controls, and the current product form canvas.

The count above the available panel shows how many questions match the current filter and how many remain available. A question disappears from this panel after you add it to the canvas because the same question cannot appear twice.

Add and arrange questions

  1. Enter part of a question name in Filter questions when the available list is long.
  2. Drag the question from the available panel onto the canvas.
  3. Drop it where the question should appear on the registration form.
  4. Drag questions already on the canvas to change their order.
  5. Select Save.

The filter only narrows the available list. It does not remove questions or change the canvas.

The Save button is disabled until the form has unsaved changes. After a successful save, Curling IO briefly shows Form layout saved and disables the button again.

Choose required or optional

Select a question's Optional or Required badge to switch its answer requirement. A required question must be completed before the registration can continue.

Only require information you genuinely need. Longer required forms make every registration slower, even when the answer is useful only occasionally.

Be careful with required checkbox questions. A required checkbox forces every registrant to check it. If you need an explicit yes-or-no answer, create a Multiple Choice question with No and Yes options instead. See yes-or-no questions for examples.

Preview the responsive layout

The registration form automatically changes between one, two, and three columns based on the space available. Questions stay in the order shown on the canvas, but Curling IO fits them into the available columns.

Select 1 under Preview to see the narrow layout used on small screens. Every question takes the full width.

Select 2 to see the medium-width layout.

The same product form canvas previewed in two columns.

Select 3 to see the wide layout.

The same product form canvas previewed in three columns.

Some available questions show 2 col or 3 col. These questions span that many columns when space allows. Longer controls, such as Lineup, can also use additional vertical space. All questions collapse to the full available width in the one-column layout.

The preview buttons do not save a preferred column count. Registrants see one column on small screens, two columns on medium screens, and three columns on wide screens automatically.

Use gaps and separators

The Layout tools section contains two reusable items:

  • Gap leaves one empty position in a multi-column layout. It has no visible effect when the form has only one column.
  • Separator adds a horizontal break across the form.

Drag either tool onto the canvas and place it between questions. You can add more than one. Select its remove icon when it is no longer needed. Use the three previews to check how the layout behaves at each width before saving.

Understand locked event questions

An event can add questions such as Team / Skip's Name or Lineup based on its Info settings. A lock icon means the question cannot be removed from the form while that event setting is enabled.

The lock controls removal. You can still change the question between Optional and Required when its badge is selectable.

To remove a locked event question, return to Info and turn off or change the team-name or lineup setting that added it. Then return to Form builder and confirm the result.

Products that are not events do not have these event-specific questions.

Remove a question

Select the remove icon on an unlocked canvas question, or drag the question back to the available panel. Then select Save.

Removing a question stops asking it for new registrations on this product. It does not delete the question definition, remove it from other product forms, or delete answers from completed registrations. Re-adding the same question makes it available for new registrations again.

If a discount depends on the question, Curling IO rejects the save because the discount would no longer work for this product. Update or remove that discount assignment before removing the question from the form.

What registrants see

Registrants see the saved questions in the cart before checkout. If the product requires a participant, they select one first. Required questions are marked with an asterisk, and the form uses the number of columns that fit the available screen width.

The registration page can also contain participant details, event lineup fields, and addons. Locked lineup fields come from the event's Info settings. Addons are also configured under Info, not in the form builder.

These screenshots use the Canuck theme. Another theme changes the colours and typography, but the form layout and answer requirements work the same way.

Change a live form carefully

Review the form before adding required questions while registration is open. Anyone who has not completed the form must answer the new question before continuing.

Prefer creating a new custom question when the meaning of an answer has changed. Renaming an existing question is appropriate only when the stored answers still mean the same thing. Otherwise, current and historical answers become hard to distinguish in registrations, exports, and reports.

Troubleshooting

A question is missing from the available panel

Clear Filter questions and check the canvas. Questions already on the form do not appear in the available panel.

If it is a custom question, use its pencil action and confirm that Product forms is enabled under Use this question in. A question already on the canvas does not also appear in the available list.

A question cannot be removed

Look for a lock icon. Locked event questions come from the product's Info settings and must be disabled there.

Save is disabled

The form has no unsaved changes. Add, remove, reorder, or change a question's answer requirement before selecting Save.

The form does not save

Read the error shown beside the save action. A removed question may still be required by a discount assigned to the product. Update that discount or its product assignment, then try saving the form again.
